How long will my dog live? It is what every owner would like to know. Obviously, we will never get an answer, but just a few rules of common sense will help our pets live longer.

Just like it is for humans, we can positively affect the longevity of our furry friends by ensuring them a healthy and balanced diet, supplying them with a proper healthcare and also keeping them fit with an active lifestyle.

What is new, anyway, is that some specific studies can help us determine the lifespan of our dog according to the breed.

In particular, these researches show that smaller dogs live longer than bigger ones. For exemple, an Irish Wolfhound (average 115 lbs) has an average lifespan of 7 years, while a Jack Russell Terrier (average 15 lbs) can live up to 13-16 years.

Reality seems to confirm this theory. The world’s oldest Chihuahua, in fact, is Megabyte, who passed away on January 1, 2014 at the age of 20 years and 265 days. On the other hand, the French Mastiff (or Dogue de Bordeaux), known for its majestic muscular body, seems to have the shortest lifespan (5-8 years).
