South Carolina flood evacuee dogs
The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society is now caring for 12 dogs who were evacuated from the St. Francis Animal Shelter in Georgetown, South Carolina.
The shelter was forced to evacuate all animals when heavy rain caused flash flooding along the Carolina coast earlier this month. The 12 dogs – a mix of breeds – are being evaluated by the Humane Society’s veterinary staff and will be ready for adoption beginning Wednesday morning.

The Humane Society of the United States dispatched a request for help across the country late last week. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society immediately stepped up, drove to Annapolis, Maryland to meet the group halfway, and transported the dogs back to the shelter in Menands.
“We are happy to help our fellow shelters in times of crisis,” said Brad Shear, executive director of the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. “Other humane societies and shelters throughout the country are taking as many animals as they can to help the overall effort. This is what animal groups do when there is an urgent need.”
“The recent flooding has caused damage to multiple shelters throughout South Carolina. The Humane Society of the United States is assessing the needs of these shelters, and providing water, supplies and other services while these communities recover from Hurricane Joaquin,” said Brian Shapiro, New York State Director for The HSUS. “We are grateful for the quick response by the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society to care for and adopt out these shelter dogs.”
