Therapy dogs used to help kids read | Dogalize
There are dozens of volunteers in the Lima City School district. But of all of the volunteers, students are especially enamored by to two furry, four legged visitors.
First grade students at Independence Elementary and second grade students at Heritage Elementary are practicing their reading skills with dogs Max and Bear and their handler Helen Bibler.
Max is a 4 year old golden doodle and Bear is an 11 year old golden retriever. Both are certified therapy dogs through Pet Partners. Max and Bear rotate the volunteer duties every other week.
Teachers say the dogs give the kids confidence to read since they are non-judgmental.
Bibler started the school visits in 2009 after watching a program about a reading, therapy dog.
