Dog fleas are one of the most common pests in dogs during the summer. They are very common in dogs living in tropical areas. Dog fleas are pretty active and feed on the blood of dogs and people. The market offers many natural remedies against these insects but they can get corrosive or harmful to your pet’s skin.
We have collected some natural remedies to prevent and eliminate dog fleas in most of dog breeds. They are not hard to make and they usually involve things you have in your house.
Apple cider vinegar
This one is widely used to prevent the growth of fleas on your pet. The premise is that a ph-balanced pet is a flea deterrent.
You can add ACV to your dog’s drinking water. Add 1 teaspoon to one liter of their drinking water.
Alternatively, you can prepare a solution to spray on your dog. Simply dilute a cup of apple vinegar (or white vinegar) into 1 liter of fresh water. You may add 2-3 drops of lavender or cedar oil to give it some nice smell and make your pet´s skin look silky. Spray this solution and lather on the dog. Use a damp cloth for the areas close to the head to avoid getting into the eyes while you pet your dog.
Essential oils vs dog fleas
You probably noticed that we have added lavender and cedar oils into our concoctions. This is because essential oils deter fleas from coming in contact with your dog.
Mix 3-5 drops of cedar or lavender oil with 2-3 tablespoons of water. Using an eyedropper, add 5-10 drops onto the dog´s collar or a nice bandana. We strongly suggest you dilute these oils since they can become a nuisance to your dog. Remember that dogs have a better sense of smell than us. Avoid them to drink the oil to prevent stomach bloat.
Lemons contain limonene, which helps get rid of dog fleas. Boil a pot of water and add freshly cut slices of lemon. Turn the heat off and let it steep through the night. The next day, dip a comb or a sponge and brush your dog with it.
