Dog Breeds: Golden Retriever temperament and personality

Golden Retriever dog

The Golden Retriever

A cute and lovely dog that everyone wants to have.  The Golden Retriever is a large friendly and devoted dog that has made the delight of American homes for years, making him the third most popular in the country.

Origins

The breed was developed in Scotland by Sir Dudley Majoribanks who was later known as Lord Tweedmouth.  Tweedmouth wanted a dog that would retrieve ducks and other waterfowl so that the hunter would go for them.

From 1835 to 1890, Tweedmouth records show that he aimed for the Golden Retriever breed.  These dogs called everyone’s attention due to their hunting skills.

The English Kennel Club recognized the “Retriever-Yellow or Golden” as an official breed in 1911.  But it was until 1920 when it was known as Golden Retriever.  The American Kennel Club officially recognized it a breed in 1932.

Physical Characteristics

Today, there are three distinct types of Golden Retriever: the British, the American, and the Canadian type. The Golden Retriever dog is strong with a wavy, water-repellent coat. Their coats are golden, yellow, or blonde.

The male weighs 65 to 75 pounds and stands 23 to 24 inches tall.  Females weigh 55 to 65 pounds and are usually 21 to 22 inches tall.

Temperament and personality

This dog is calm and sweet.  They make excellent home dogs and love to be part of a “pack”.  They do not enjoy time alone in the backyard.  The Golden Retriever dog is very eager to work for their owner and is always in a good disposition.

Caring for a Golden Retriever dog

These are active and energetic dogs.  You must take them for long walks (40-45 minutes), have him romp in the backyard and play fetch.  Whatever you throw at them, they will go for it and retrieve it.  They are not called Golden Retrievers for no reason.

One characteristic that some might find cute but others might find annoying is that they mature very slowly.  A dog will display puppy-like characteristics well at age 3 or even 4.  They are shedders and are dogs that you have to keep indoors.  Do not get a Golden Retriever dog if you are going to keep him in a yard all day.

Training

This is a very intelligent dog and is fairly easy to train. Always use positive reinforcement with a firm and consistent hand.

Fun facts

  • They are nice and playful with kids but due to their size they can knock them over.
  • They love to eat, so check the amount of food they intake.
