In 1885, a shepherd named Adrien Janssens purchased a dog with a rough-hair coat and pale coloration called Vos I. He used it to herd his flock and bred him to a short-haired and brindle brown. After that, he crossed Vos I with his daughters to start a homogeneous dog that became the ancestors of the Belgian Malinois dog, and at least other two breeds.
