Dog Breeds: Poodle, temperament and personality

Poodle dog

The Talented Poodle

The Poodle dog is a pretty impressive dog breed.  They are intelligent, clever, proud, elegant, and carry a bag of many talents.  This is an affectionate dog that loves to be around his family.

The exact origins of the Poodle dog are a bit blurry. It is clear, though, that he was developed to hunt waterfowl.  So, as hard to believe as it might seem, this dog would jump into the water and fetch waterfowl for hunters.

There are many theories surrounding its origins.  Some say it is the result of crossing several European water dogs.  Others claim that he is a descendant of the North African Barbet.  It is also believed that they descend from Asian herding dogs.

They were not very common in the United States until after World War II.  Starting by the mid-1950s, the Poodle became the country´s most popular dog.  He is presently in the 8th place of popularity.

Physical Characteristics

The Poodle is a group of dogs that include the Standard, Toy, and Miniature Poodle.  This distinction only has to do with size.  Besides this, they all have the same standard. They are squarely built and proportional.  The eyes are dark and oval-shaped.  The coat is dense and can come in a variety of colors.

The Toy Poodle is no taller than 10 inches and weighs 6 to 9 pounds. The Miniature Poodle can be from 11 to 15 inches tall and weigh 15 to 17 pounds.  The Standard Poodle is above 15 inches and can weigh 45 to 70 pounds.

Temperament and Personality

The most common terms used to describe a Poodle dog are loyal, loving, intelligent, and mischievous. But he is also very distinguished and at the same time, goofy and playful.

He can make a good guard dog as he barks at strangers.  He is affectionate with his family but has a hard time meeting strangers.

Caring for a Poodle dog

As long as they have a loving family and daily exercise, Poodles will do great in any type of home. It is preferable to have this dog living inside your house.   They are very active and they also like to swim.  Their hypoallergenic coat requires periodic grooming.

This is a very intelligent dog which means is easy to train.  He is willing to please their owner and he will easily learn.  However, just like he is smart enough to learn good habits, he is also good at learning the bad ones.  Make sure you train him with a constant and firm hand.
