Cat breeds: the Ragamuffin cat characteristics and behavior
The Ragamuffin cat is a nice and docile cat, variant of the Ragdoll. Their most striking characteristic is probably their rabbit-like thick fur.
Origins
The Ragdoll cat was under the strict control of the breed’s founder, Ann Baker. Other breeders, wanted to increase its genetic pool. So, they created a separate group where they outcrossed the Himalayans, Persians, and domestic longhair cats to diversify its appearance. In 1994, when these breeders obtained what seemed like a new cat breed, they called it a Ragamuffin, since the name “Ragdoll” was strictly protected by Baker and her International Ragdoll Cat Association.
The Cat Fanciers Association did not recognize the Ragamuffin cat as a separate breed until February 2011.
Physical characteristics
Coming across a Ragamuffin cat is a complete delight. Their coats, which can come in any colors, pointed or non-pointed, are heaven-like. This medium-length coat increases in length as it approaches the stomach. They have a muscular and rectangular body.
Females usually weigh 10 to 15 pounds while males can weigh up to 20 pounds.
Personality
This cat realizes his one purpose in life, to follow his owners everywhere and sit on their laps the second they sit. He is a loving and huggable fur ball. His friendly personality along with his intelligence and sweet nature make him seem puppylike. He is willing to learn tricks and to fetch.
Whenever a visitor comes home, he will be at the door to greet and shake hands with them. Hold a Ragamuffin cat in your arms and you will have a very comfortable feline who will sleep in your arms. They are very playful but their intelligence enables them to understand their limits.
Caring for a Ragamuffin cat
This is definitively a sweet cat to have but one that requires a lot of attention. Do not get one if you usually leave your house alone for many hours. Despite it having a hair that is dense and medium-sized, it is low-maintenance. Since it will not tangle, one weekly brush should be enough to remove dead hair.
Provide him toys and mind-challenging games.
