Cat breeds: the Ragdoll cat characteristics and behavior

The Ragdoll cat is a beautiful cat with blue eyes and colorpoint coat.  If trained properly, he can learn to fetch things and walk on a leash.

Origins

Anne Baker in Riverside, California developed these cats in the 1960s.  The foundation for Baker’s cat breed was Josephine, a domestic longhair and other breeds of unknown ancestry that she owned or had found.

She aimed towards producing cats with a docile and loving nature, along with a large size and beautiful long coats.  Josephine was Persian/Angora type and had the Siamese point coloration.   Birmans, Burmese, and Persians could have also contributed to the development of the breed.

The Cat Fanciers Association began recognition process of the Ragdoll cat in 1993.  He was given full recognition in 2000.

Physical characteristics

This young cat is also one of the largest cats.  He has a sturdy body over proportionate legs.  Females are typically 8 to 15 pounds and males range from 12 to 20 pounds.  His blue eyes respond to the same genes responsible for the point coloration.

The plush hair of the Ragdoll cat consists mainly of long guard hair. This coat can come in six colors: chocolate, seal, red, blue, cream, and lilac.  Two variations are also accepted and they are the lynx and the tortoiseshell.

Personality

The Ragdoll cat has a sweet and loving personality.  The instant you hold them in your arms they will snuggle and make themselves comfortable to sleep.  They will follow their owners everywhere and sit on their lap.  These cats can learn to fetch any toys thrown at them.

They are pretty active cats that will energetically play with their toys.  They are quick learners and enjoy family activities.

Caring for a Ragdoll cat

Despite their long doublecoat, the Ragdoll cat´s hair is not hard to maintain.  Groom their hair twice a week to prevent matting.  Pay special attention to where the legs meet the body.  The length of the coat will vary depending on the season.
