How does Nexgard for dogs work?
Nexgard contains a component known as afoxolaner. This substance kills fleas and ticks by overstimulating their nervous system. When the dog consumes the product it goes into his bloodstream. There is a constant release of afoxolaner into the bloodstream that, while it keeps the dog safe, it kills ticks and fleas.
In order for the product to work, the ticks and fleas must bite the dog. When they consume the dog’s blood, Nexgard enters their system, killing them through overstimulation of the nervous system. It is important to note the Nexgard for dogs does not prevent your dog from getting ticks and fleas but kills the one already present.
The product has to be prescribed by a veterinary on dogs with 8 weeks of age and older. Once the tablet in the form of a chewable is ingested by the dog, it begins to deliver doses of afoxolaner into their bloodstream. When the blood comes into the tick or fleas body, it kills them within 24 hours approximately.
Side effects of Nexgard
This product goes into your dog´s bloodstream. This is probably one major concern of dog owners that plan on using the medication on their dogs. According to the developers of the product, side effects might include vomiting, itching, diarrhea, lethargy and lack of appetite.
Apparently, there are reports of dogs having serious side effects and some, even death, after using the product. Either way, you should always ask your veterinary and never administer your dog any medication without a medical prescription.
