What is a sheep dog and what do they do?

When you read the term “sheep dog” it is probably easy to figure out what these dogs are about. Formally, a sheep dog or sheepdog is one used in the raising of sheep. Within this rather broad classification, we find pastoral dogs and herding dogs.

Let us take a look at some sheepdogs in the dog world:

Border Collie

The Border Collie was developed in the Anglo-Scottish border region. This dog has the particularity of being highly intelligent, very energetic, athletic and acrobatic. Even though they make great companions, they are still used for herding livestock around the world.

Croatian Sheepdog

This is another energetic dog, weatherproof, and adaptable dog. His coat always has a black base. As the name suggests, this is a dog breed from Croatia.

Hungarian Puli

This small to medium breed is original from Hungary. The main characteristic of this livestock guarding dog is its long coat with cords.

Icelandic Sheepdog

The Icelandic Sheepdog is a Spitz type dog and it originates from the dogs brought into Iceland by the Vikings. Icelandics use this dog to herd sheeps in the countryside.

Maremma Sheepdog

This one comes from central Italy, specifically from Abruzzo and the Maremma region of Lazio and Tuscany. People in Abruzzo still use him as a herding dog.

Old English Sheepdog

The large Old English Sheepdog was developed in England. They usually grow a long coat. Traditionally, they are also known as Bobtail due to the shape of tail when docked.

Shetland Sheep dog

A hard-working one, this herding dog is energetic, agile, obedient, and always willing to please. This Collie-looking dog is original from Scotland.

Tornjack

From the lands of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia comes this mountain dog. These powerful dogs are energetic and squarely built. This very calm dog also makes for a good guard dog whenever the situation requires it.

Welsh Sheepdog

These dogs vary a little in appearance. Just like most sheep dogs, they are bred for their working abilities more than for their appearance. This collie-type dog is a working dog but no kennel in the world recognizes him yet.
