Prednisone for dogs
Prednisone is a medication usually prescribed to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system. Prednisone for dogs is one of the most common prescribed drugs.
What is prednisone?
Prednisone and Prednisolone are glucocorticoid medications that are typically prescribed to treat inflammations, for the treatment of cancer, and a series of other diseases. Prednisone for dogs is converted into Prednisolone by the liver. This is used whenever the dog´s body is not capable of making enough glucocorticoid on its own. Whenever the liver function in the dog is weak, veterinarians will also prescribe Prednisolone.
What is it used for?
Prednisone was originally intended for humans. It has been largely used by veterinarians, though. This medication is a corticosteroid, and as such, it is widely used to treat many diseases in dogs, including skin allergies, arthritis, canine asthma, and any other involving an inflammation.
Due to its side effects, you should apply this medication with moderation and under prescription only.
How do you use it?
There is a recommended dosage that will, of course, depend on the size of the dog. Also, it will depend on the dog´s condition. For example, a dog having adrenal insufficiency might be prescribed a dosage of 0.05 to 0.18 mg/lb by mouth per day. The vet will reduce the dosage once your dog is beginning to recover.
Never administer this drug to your dog without consulting with your veterinarian first the dosage and frequency. He will provide you the best treatment plan specific for your pet.
