The correct Benadryl dosage for dogs

Before we get down to the proper Benadryl dosage for dogs, there are two things we need to establish:

  1. Know what Benadryl is used for and do not self-prescribe your dog.
  2. The correct dosage of Benadryl for dogs is best determined by your dog´s veterinarian, who has a record of your dog.

What does Benadryl do to your dog?

Benadryl is a relatively safe drug and it is well tolerated and it is routinely prescribed by veterinarians.

Since it is an antihistamine it is commonly used against allergies.  The medication, whose generic name is diphenhydramine, blocks the H-1 receptors in smooth muscle and blood vessels.

It can be used to treat environmental allergies, allergic reactions to a bite or vaccination.

How is the Benadryl dosage for dogs calculate

The standard Benadryl dosage for dogs is 1 mg per pound of body weight, so knowing this is important.  Moreover, you should provide two or three times a day.

When you go to the store, you will probably find it in 25 mg pills, which would be appropriate for a 25-lb dog.  Always double-check that you are giving the medication in the proper dosage.

Plus, some Benadryl might be mixed with other substances, so make sure it only contains diphenhydramine.

Use with caution

As with any other medication, Benadryl has side effects.  This is why we insist on you taking your dog to the veterinarian.  Even though we are providing the approximate Benadryl dosage for dogs, keep in mind that this is for over-the-counter purchases.

But there are other factors that need to be considered before prescribing it to your dog. If you start noticing that your dog is having an allergic reaction to the medication, take him to the veterinarian.  Also, if your dog is not responding well to the medication, take him to the veterinarian.
