Rimadyl for Dogs

Rimadyl for dogs is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) prescribed to dogs to relieve them from temporary pain.  However, it has been approved for long-term use.  Rimadyl is actually one of the commercial names of carprofen, a veterinary drug.

These type of drugs are less invasive than steroids and have an anti-inflammatory effect on dogs.  This is why they are used for long term.

Rimadyl comes in three forms for dogs:  caplets, chewable tablets, and injection.  The veterinarian will decide which is the best method for your dog.

What is Rimadyl used for?

Rimadyl is a very widely prescribed drug by veterinarians due to dogs’ high tolerance to it.  This medication acts in dogs in three ways:

  • Effectively treats inflammation
  • Reduces fever
  • Reduces pain

Due to its ability to treat inflammation and reduce pain, veterinarians prescribe it after a surgery.  This helps the patient stay more comfortable.

Veterinarians also prescribe Rimadyl for the treatment of inflammation caused by osteoarthritis.  It also helps reduce pain in the joints due to its analgesic properties.  In fact, treatment against joint pain and inflammation is one of the most common causes of prescription of Rimadyl for dogs.

Rimadyl for dogs is usually a good choice for the reduction of pain caused by arthritis as well.  You should talk to your veterinarian if the drug is safe for your dog or, if you are already giving it to your dog and see side effects, ask him why.

What are the side effects?

There have been many horror stories coming from owners that have been giving their dogs Rimadyl for even a year.  So, owners who administer Rimadyl for dogs for a long period of time should be careful in monitoring their dog’s overall health periodically.

Very commonly, side effects of Rimadyl are associated with the gastrointestinal tract.  Conditions such as vomiting, diarrhea, and ulcers are some of the complications that can be caused by this drug.

Side effects on liver and kidney are rare but when they happen, they are serious.  This is why veterinarians suggest a monitoring of the liver and kidney during a long treatment.
