Cephalexin for dogs
Cephalexin for dogs is an antibiotic that can be used to fight a wide range of bacteria. It can be given in the form of liquid, tablets, or capsule. It works for both humans and dogs. Brands of this product include Keflex, Rilexine, Sporidex, Biocef, and Kefta. It is a first-generation cephalosporin, similar to penicillin.
Uses
Cephalexin for dogs helps fight a wide spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. But note that although it is quite active against gram-positive bacteria, it is “moderately active” against gram-negative bacteria. This is one of the most widely used antibiotics by veterinarians.
The range of bacteria that can be eliminated with cephalexin for dogs includes Staphylococcus, E. coli, Haemophilus influenza, Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus mirabilis, Streptococcus pneumonia, and Streptococcus pyogenes.
Cephalexin for dogs treats the following conditions, among others:
- Urinary tract infections
- Bone infections
- Ear infections
- Staph infections
- E. coli infections
- Haemophilus influenza
- Hot spots on the skin
Dosage
Typically, a veterinarian will prescribe 10 to 15mg per each pound. Do not try to dose your dog without consulting with your veterinarian. This is because the concentration in every bottle of the commercial product may vary.
The drug can be administered between 8 to 12 hours or three times a day. Your vet will recommend if it should be given with or without food. Make sure you follow the prescription given. Treatment may last from 7 to 10 days.
Side Effects
When taking your dog to the vet, he will check your pet’s medical history, if he is on any other drug, if he has any other condition that can be worsened by the drug, such as a kidney condition, and any bad reaction.
Cefalexin is pretty safe, but just like with any other drug it can have some side effects that might include:
- Vomiting in dogs;
- Diarrhea in dogs;
- Weight loss in dogs;
- Skin rashes;
- Drooling in dogs;
- Hyperexcitability.
The first three usually occur when the drug is administered without food. This is solved by accompanying the drug with food.
Other more deadly side-effects might take place, such as kidney damage or damaged motor control. If your dog’s effects become severe, take your dog to the veterinarian immediately.
