Sagwa, The Chinese Siamese Cat is a PBS Kids and Sprout educational Chinese -Canadian – American educational animated series based on a 1994 novel by Amy Tan. The show was produced by the animation studio CinéGroupe and Sesame Workshop, the creator of Sesame Street.
About the Show
The series is set c. 1861-1912, during the late Qing Dynasty. The premise of the show is Sagwa having fun every day as she learns and teaches valuable life lessons. One thing that characterizes the show is the settings and messages about loyalty and family.
Sagwa, The Chinese Siamese Cat only ran for one season of 40 episodes premiering on September 3, 2001. It was canceled later in 2002 but then went on reruns on some PBS affiliates up to September 2008.
The characters of the show can be divided into the Miao Family, Humans, Best Friends, and Allies.
Sagwa Miao is six years old and is the middle child of the Miao family and born in the year of the Dog. He is kind, curious, and creative.
Dongwa Miao is eight years old and is the oldest child of the Miao family and born in the year of the Monkey. He is intelligent, sometimes stubborn, and competitive.
Sheegwa Miao is aged 4 and is the younger member of the Miao family and born in the year of the Rat.
Baba Wim Bao Miao is the father of the Miao family and a very strict one.
Mama Shao Fun Miao is the mother of the Miao family and is also very strict.
Nai-Nai Miao is the grandmother and is old-fashioned, patient, and full of wisdom.
Yeh-Yeh Miao is the grandfather of the family and he is wise and patient like Nai-Nai Miao.
Uncle Miao is Baba´s brother and very into ancient local history.
Ayi Mae-Mae Miao is Mama´s sister and Sagwa’s aunt and babysitter.
