Dog Peppermint: Can Dogs Safely Have Peppermint?
You know how it is with dogs. On one hand, they can survive many foods that would send us humans to the emergency room. On the other hand, they can get poisoned by substances that we are impervious too.
Peppermint itself is not toxic to dogs but it can cause an upset stomach. There can also be consequences such as vomiting and diarrhea. So, the advice here is to keep peppermint as far away as possible from your pup.
One concern veterinarians have is what the plant is combined with. Many times it is mixed with the sweetener Xylitol. This one is toxic for dogs and can actually lead to death if left untreated.
Also, be aware that the common mint plant is actually toxic to dogs as well. So, make sure it is off your garden.
Dog Peppermint: What about Peppermint Oil to Treat Fleas?
The answer here is not simple. For starters, we should clear out that this essential oil does not kill fleas. Many of us have probably heard that it actually works. That will actually depend on the amount and the concentration.
We do know that the essential oil will repel fleas. This leaves us with two questions.
- Will applying this oil on your dog’s skin work? There is no evidence supporting that it will.
- Is it safe to apply it? We will go with a no for the moment since there are no credited studies about it so it is best to play it safe.
