Dog Diarrhea – Causes, symptoms, and treatment

Since dogs will usually eat whatever comes before them, diarrhea is a common issue in dogs. Other times, though, dog diarrhea can be an indication of something more serious, especially if depositions are too frequent and severe.

What are the causes of dog diarrhea?

Most of the time, dog diarrhea happens suddenly. A sudden change in diet, scavenging behavior, or a parasitic infection could be the causes in this case.

In some cases, the condition is brought about by an excess eating, eating garbage, or consuming spoiled foods. Swallowing strange objects could also cause an upset stomach. Salmonella poisoning is a common cause as well.

What symptoms should you look for?

A dog´s salivary enzymes are designed to kill bacteria. This is why dogs can eat foods that would send us humans straight to the hospital. Once food is in the stomach, the acid, which is three times stronger than ours, will digest food. Under normal conditions after under 10 hours, the dog should release a well-formed and firm stool.

Check your dog’s stool every time. Remember that dog diarrhea can happen suddenly but it can also be the result of a more serious underlying condition such as cancer. Other symptoms to look for are vomiting, weight loss, no appetite, and abdominal pain.

What should you do if your dog has diarrhea?

If your dog is young and has a preexisting health condition, call the veterinarian immediately. Even mild diarrhea can greatly affect puppies.

For normal dog diarrhea, these are some measures you can take:

• Avoid dehydration by providing large amounts of water. Dilute some food in the water to encourage the dog if needed.
White meat broth and white rice is a good diet until the stool gets back to normal.
• If your dog has vomited once or twice, remove all food for 12 hours.
• If diarrhea has lasted for 24 hours, take him to the vet right away.
