Common strange cat behaviours explained

  • Rubbing their cheeks on everything. They do it on walls, trees, furniture, you, everywhere. They are simply marking territory.
  • Sniffing faces. Although it might sound too obvious, a cat is memorizing your face to help build trust.
  • Purring. Cats purr for several reasons. Mostly, they do it to soothe themselves when they are in pain or stressed.
  • Bringing “gifts”. Although domestic cats do not need to hunt for food, their instinct is still strong. When they bring you a dead (or alive) bird or rodent, they are trying to teach you how to do it.
  • Butting their head. This is a gesture of affection.

Common strange cat behaviours explained

  • Eating stuff that is not food. They chew on wood, plastic, metals, inedible plants and almost on anything you can think of. This behaviour is not fully understood but it could be a sign of diseases such as anaemia, mineral deficiencies, genetics, hyperthyroidism and stress.
  • Cat stare. An intense cat scare can mean that he is trying to get your attention or that he has detected danger. Don’t look them straight to the eye as they consider this a sign of aggression.
  • Urinating or defecating outside the litter box. This can be caused by medical or behavioural conditions.
  • Kneading. This is a behaviour that cats picked from when they were nursing. The pressing against the mom’s mammary glands stimulated the production of more milk. As adults, they do it to show content.
